Step 4 - Site Architecture
Now you need to group the different pieces
of content and functionality into some logical order (it wouldn't
do a lot of good to have brake lights in the front of the car, or
a gas pedal on the wheels). Look at your list of content and functionality
and group the different components together. Try to think about
how the different audiences would group them. Once they are in groups
that look logical, name each group. The name should be short and
descriptive. Under the new names, do any of the pieces of content
or functionality not seem to fit any more? Arrange them as necessary
until it looks right. A great way to do this is by listing out the
contents on sticky notes and arranging them in columns on a table,
then naming the columns. As you've probably already guessed, this
step is helping to create the navigation and content architecture
for your web site. The next step will help to refine this navigation
so that it is usable by the visitors to your web site.
